Resources Multiplied - Morning Musing Over Coffee
. . . the disciples came to Him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves." But Jesus said, "That isn't necessary - you feed them." But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!" they answered.
"Bring them here," He said. Then He told the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward Heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, He gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to me people. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children.
Matthew 14:15-21
A number of things stand out to me in this story.
- A need was presented to Jesus with a man-made solution. The people are hungry, please send them to find food.
- Jesus presented a different solution - one that required action on the part of the disciples.
- The disciples acknowledged their inability to fill the need
- Jesus asked them to bring their resources to Him.
- They obeyed.
- Jesus blessed the resources and repeated His instructions.
- The disciples then took these resources and proceeded in obedience to begin to meet the need.
- The miniscule resources miraculously multiplied to meet the need.
- After all the needs were met the disciples were left with even more resources than they began with.
I think it's time to start trusting this same Jesus to meet our needs and to use what we sometimes think are our meager resources to begin meeting needs around us as He prompts us. He will faithfully provide above and beyond what we need to follow His leading.
