Plarn Sleeping Mats

Today I want to share a project I've been working on the last couple months that I am having so much fun with. I always had this big plastic bag somewhere in my house full of other plastic bags and it would just get fuller and fuller until it was overflowing and finally in frustration I would end stuff a bunch of those plastic bags in the trash and haul them off to the landfill. Then I would start all over. Then I discovered I can do something really useful with these bags. I can turn them into plarn! Isn't that exciting?

Ok, so let me explain what plarn is and what I am doing with it and maybe it will make a little more sense. Plarn is basically plastic yarn. This plastic yarn is made by cutting the plastic bags into strips, looping those strips together and then rolling all those looped together strips into a big ball. Now I have plarn. There is a big variety of cool projects that can be done with this plarn. Just do a search on Pinterest and you will probably be amazed at the creative things people have done with plarn. But I'm not that creative and I just wanted something very simple but useful. After a couple of false starts I found the perfect project for me.

So what is this project? Well, it's turning all this plastic yarn into sleeping mats for the homeless. At first I was very skeptical that these mats would really be useful but after reading numerous articles about them I decided to  I love to crochet but I'm not all that good at anything but the very basic beginner stitch. But I really, really enjoy it. I have a very hard time just sitting and watching a movie or listening to the radio or an audio book although I enjoy all those things. Crocheting these mats is the perfect thing to keep both my hands busy while my mind occupied. And I hope in some small way I can make someone else's life easier in the process.
